TAIWAN CITIES

Your Gateway to Urban Adventures & Cultural Hearts

You can’t go wrong with Taipei. It’s the heart of it all – the capital, buzzing with this infectious energy. You’ve got the famous Taipei 101, sure, but also those legendary night markets (prepare your stomach!), surprisingly peaceful temples, and a food scene that’ll blow your mind. For a full-on urban experience, Taipei’s definitely where it’s at.

If you enjoy art, offbeat cafes, and a healthy amount of color, then this central Taiwanese city is one you won’t want to miss. It’s replete with innovative art, boasts a reputation for these hip, cool hangout cafes, and then there’s the highly Instagrammable Rainbow Village. And as a bonus, it’s where bubble tea was invented. For a city as much imagination as it is just plain fun, Taichung’s a winner.

Tainan (台南市)

As Taiwan’s oldest city, it’s like stepping into a living museum, with cool old streets and historic sites everywhere. And the food? It’s honestly a huge reason to visit – people travel from all over just to eat here. For an experience that’s rich in culture and will leave your taste buds singing, Tainan’s the one.

Kaohsiung (高雄市)

If you want to experience southern Taiwan’s energy, this port city is where it’s at. It’s got this great artistic flair – you’ll see cool stuff everywhere – plus some seriously beautiful views around the harbor. The cultural centers here are pretty special too. And honestly? It just feels sunny and more relaxed down there. For a dose of art, harbor life, and good vibes, Kaohsiung delivers.

Hualien (花蓮市)

If Taroko Gorge is on your radar (and it should be!), then Hualien is your essential stop. This east coast city is basically the doorstep to one of Taiwan’s most stunning natural masterpieces.

Yilan (宜蘭縣)

Yilan should definitely be on your radar. It’s a popular trip from Taipei for a reason! Beyond the relaxation, you’ll find a cool arts scene, a bit of that charming rural Taiwan, and some really solid family-friendly attractions. It’s a great all-rounder, especially for a quick escape.

Keelung (基隆市)

Ever been to a city where the night market is THE main event? That’s Keelung for you, home of the incredible Miaokou Night Market. Seriously, people travel just for the food here. But Keelung’s also got this authentic, busy port town feel that’s really interesting to experience. And, bonus, it’s a great base for seeing some unique coastal scenery nearby, like the crazy rock formations at Yehliu. Come hungry!

Hsinchu (新竹市)

Hsinchu is often called the ‘Windy City’ and is definitely a powerhouse for Taiwan’s tech scene. But there’s more to Hsinchu than just microchips! You can explore its historical heart around the iconic East Gate, check out some serene temples, and you absolutely have to try their local delicacies – those Hsinchu meatballs (貢丸 – gòngwán) and rice noodles (米粉 – mǐfěn) are legendary for a reason. A city with a modern pulse and a tasty past!

Taitung (臺東縣)

Taitung really has that “east coast vibe”. It’s less about massive cities and more about the landscape – the Pacific on one side, steep mountains on the other. It draws people who are into surfing or cycling. There’s a strong indigenous presence too, which is really important to the area.

Nantou (南投縣)

Nantou is all about about mountains and natural beauty. Think of places like Sun Moon Lake – it really is a highlight – or Cingjing Farm, where you get those amazing high-mountain views. Plus, the tea from this area is a big deal. It’s a great choice for fresh air and some truly memorable landscapes.

Kenting (墾丁)

You’ll find Kenting (墾丁) at the southern tip of Taiwan. It’s really about the beaches, water sports, and enjoying the food on Kenting street.

Taoyuan (桃園市)

Taoyuan (桃園市) is home to Taiwan’s main international airport. Many travelers go through there. It’s not just the airport. Daxi Old Street is also in Taoyuan. It’s known for history and character.
Some nice reservoirs and parks too, good for a bit of quiet. It’s also a base for exploring parts of northern Taiwan if you have more time.
